47 – oppression

A user asks the I Ching the following question: “Why is my own life, my urge for self-expression, being so massively blocked by external necessities again this year? How can I resolve this conflict?”

While working with Hexagram 47 – Distress, the user developed an interesting interpretation of his own, which he shared with me and which I would like to reproduce here:

“My urge to express myself artistically is absolutely fine. From this impulse I draw energy. From the needs of others (= external necessities) I draw inspiration and they enrich the content of my self-expression. Both belong together in a process of development, it is the fertilization of subjectivity through encounter and vice versa. This is not a contradiction and does not cost any additional energy – as long as I am aware of it!”

Further Questions on Hexagram 47

  • One user asks: “How well developed is my ability to have relationships?”
  • Another user asks: “How about a short trip to XY this week?”
  • One user writes: “Right now I’m in an acute emergency situation with my apartment, but I can’t just move away. So my first question to the I Ching was, ‘What will it come down to with my housing situation – leave or stay?’. The answer was hexagram 47 – oppression. I then asked ‘How will I get out of the distress?’ The answer was hexagram 23 – splitting apart
